Hello to all our customers. The news this fortnight will be centered around the Melbourne Cup, and the Spring Carnivals.
Below is some information on the Melbourne Cup.
Melbourne Cup, also known as “the race that stops the nation”, is a horse race held in Australia on a Tuesday in early November every year since 1861. It is run over 3,200 meters (approximately 2 miles) at Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne. The first Tuesday of November at 3pm is set in stone as the starting date for this famous event because it had traditionally been a day off from school and work for many people.
“The race that stops the nation” refers to how Australians prepare for and watch this momentous event live on television or through other media outlets.”
It is the world’s richest and most prestigious Thoroughbred horse race, with a prize pool of $6 million Australian dollars (US$4.7 million). It is also known as ‘the race that stops a nation’.
The Melbourne Cup was created by Victoria’s Governor, Sir Charles Hotham, for the people of Melbourne and has been held annually since 1861. Of course it is one of Australia’s biggest annual sporting events!
There are three divisions: Open Handicap (for horses aged 3 years old), Group 1 Four-Year-Olds and Stayers’ Markecet (for horses aged 4 years old.) There are also several other races held alongside the main event: The Lexus Stakes (a Listed Race), The Makybe Diva Stakes (Group 2) & The Schweppes Mile (Listed).
The Melbourne Cup takes place at Flemington Racecourse which is located in the suburb of Kensington, Victoria, Australia. The racecourse is just outside the Melbourne CBD, near the Melbourne Zoo and the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.
The average attendance each year is around 95000 people but that can get as high as 200 000.
Peter is already getting in the mood for the Melbourne Cup.
